WINTERWORLD FROZEN FLEET #3

“Frozen Fleet”

Writer: Chuck Dixon

The savages have boarded the cruise ship. They start killing the passengers. Wynn goes to look for Rah Rah as Scully gets in a fight with Reynold who overheard that he had an affair with his wife. The first mate decides to start up the just fixed engines which break up the ice. It also tears a hole in the hull and the ship starts to sink. Wynn manages to jump overboard but gets captured by armed men with Coronado patches on. Scully and Trina manage to also escape and with Rah Rah’s help find the trail to Wynn. Only they arrive as a submarine is submerging.

The final issue to this mini-series delivers. It has plenty of action with the savages invading the ship. Plenty of mayhem and also a fight with Reynold and Scully. Reynold gets left behind. The big ending has the reveal of the mysterious sub introduced in the first issue returning. The crew kidnap Wynn and leaves us with this cliffhanger. Sadly, the series was cancelled, and we never did find out the mystery of the submarine and Wynn’s kidnapping. I do hope that sometime in the future Chuck can continue the story. I think IDW is hanging by a tread so it will have to be another venue.

I am glad that the series was revived after twenty years. A really fun and enjoyable post-apocalyptic take on an ice age. I loved the main characters and hope that I don’t have to wait another twenty years to see the continuing adventures.

The cannon on the cruise ship hits the vehicle. It looks like Scully and Wynn will be destroyed. Only a guy comes from the ship and welcomes them. He apologizes and treats Wynn as the new captain. He sees the captain hat she wears and thinks that she is the new captain the cruise line was supposed to send. The group manages to get tools and diesel to fix the truck. Late at night hordes of savages come on the ship and attack.

I love the idea of generations on this cruise ship waiting for a captain. They see the captain hat Wynn wears and assume it is her. This ship has survived because all the other freighters have plenty of stuff on board. There is some developing tension as Reynold realizes that Scully and his wife were having an affair. Ends with a big attack by savages. Another fun installment in the post-apocalyptic world of Winterworld.

Scully and Wynn are hunting elk and run into a group trying to take their kill. The guns they have discourage them but they do follow them back to their truck. The group rams the truck with a big, sharpened log on skis. Fortunately, it doesn’t do any serious damage. They soon find out that Reynold the guy they picked up is Trina’s husband. The truck continues until it comes on a fleet of ships frozen in ice. A cruise ship has a cannon mounted on it and tries to destroy them.

This new series starts off with promise. The big fight with some inbred morons was fun. We find out that Reynolds is Trina’s husband which causes some tension with Scully. There is a scene where we see a submarine lurking about which I am sure will play a part in the story. They also find a fleet of frozen ships with one being inhabited. A very enjoyable series.

Scully and Wynn continue on to the new girl Trina’s island. Along the way Scully and Trina develop a romance. They reach the island and find that all the men were killed, and the women and children taken. They decide to search for them but first a wagon is approaching. Scully and Trina go and find that it is a diversion. The guy Skitters took is tied and gagged. Skitters and the feral boy capture Wynn. A big fight ensues with Scully, Wynn and Trina killing Skitters and the feral boy. They let the prisoner Reynolds join them on the quest to find Trina’s people.

The ending for this was quite satisfying. They find the island and all the men were killed. Skitters is the guy from the Bear People from the old Eclipse series. Nice to find out who this guy is. Ends with them defeated and two new members to the crew. Also has a new quest in finding the captured women and children. A fun adventure set in a fascinating and unique post-apocalypse world.

The woman who stole the truck manages to get rid of her captors. She leaves them naked on the snows. They are found by their boss who goes after the truck. Scully is snow blinded and has to be led around by Wynn. They catch up to the truck and take it back. The woman claims she was stealing it to help her people trapped on an island. Wynn sympathizes with her when she mentions children. Scully relents and will go to this island. Skitters the guy after Scully kills the guy and his group tracking them except one brave man who he recruits.

A fairly fast paced story this issue. Scully and Wynn get their truck back. They also get another companion in the woman and another place to visit. The mysterious Skitters and his weird companion are also still on the trail. Hints at some more excitement next issue.

Scully and Wynn are tracking their stolen truck. They take shelter in a cave and Scully decides to scout ahead. He uses a ball of string to make sure he doesn’t get lost. After a while Wynn gets worried and with Rah Rah follows the string. They find Scully trapped on a cliff with a polar bear after him. Wynn shoots the bear and finds out Scully is now blind. Meanwhile the woman who stole their truck is captured by two guys. Also, some crazy guy has a run in with a group trying to collect a toll. This crazy guy and his feral companion kill them and continue on.

This issue starts a new arch and new artist. So far, I am enjoying both. The main story has the big reveal that Scully is not blind which poses some interesting challenges. Also interesting in finding out how he got blind. The subplots also have their own interesting development. The woman is now a prisoner to some unsavory guys. There is also this kook called Skitters who seems to be after Scully and Wynn. Introduces some interesting events that keep the reader invested in the series.

Scully decides to escape from the people of La Nina. Which is a good thing as they planned to kill him after they learned about the internal combustion engine. Wynn has been sent out on the ice with a cow bell. This bell attracts an orca that tries to eat Wynn. Fortunately, Wynn manages to get to an island. Yet she finds a past sacrifice that made it to the island and died. So, it isn’t looking good until Scully comes and blows away the orca. They get back to the village and find that someone has stolen their truck. They steal some food and supplies and go off after the thief.

This was an enjoyable story that ends the La Nina arch. It had some fun ideas with a bit of humor in this kooky cult that worshiped internal combustion engines because Al Gore wrote that they would bring back the warmth. Wynn finds out she shouldn’t be so trusting. Especially when you get sent out on the ice with a bell. Now the two have to get back their truck which was stolen by some woman.

Interesting tidbit is in the letters page it sounded like they were developing a TV series for Winterworld. That would have been cool but as far as I know nothing came of it.

The people of La Nina are debating the fate of Scully and Wynn. When they hear that they have a working truck their whole attitude changes. They are very welcoming and want the truck. They have never seen a working combustion engine and have stored up fuel. We find out that they believe combustion engines will create a greenhouse effect and warm the planet. It says so in the book by Al Gore. Scully think these people are nuts but Wynn likes the place. She also is falling for one of the young boys. They find out the place is warm because of El Nino. El Nino is ending and the villagers choose Wynn to be an offering to bring back El Nino.

I loved this issue. Dixon has a fun sense of humor. He makes this cult that misinterprets Al Gore’s book into that the greenhouse effect is good which if you look at this world it would be. Wynn seems to be falling in love and getting into this weird cult. A cult that looks like it is going to sacrifice her. There was also a subplot with a mysterious rider on a motorcycle that is coming to them. Also a fun note is Wynn wears an IDW t-shirt. I love this post-apocalyptic world.

Scully and Wynn are headed to a wall of containers. Wynn slides the vehicle to a stop and this causes the containers to collapse. This opens a way for the vehicle to escape through the Panama Canal. They decide to head south and learn from a friendly traveler that an airplane was seen there. At a village of La Nina they find a place where there is no snow. Warm air comes from the ocean and they are growing crops. Unfortunately, they get captured by the villagers. Meanwhile a guy with a flamethrower named Skitters is looking for Scully and Wynn. He torches a group of guys in monkey suits.

This was another fun issue. They arrive at Panama and find this village that seems to have warmth and agriculture. There is also a mysterious guy tracking them. Ends with the two captured and probably going to get killed. An exciting cliffhanger and stuff that makes the reader want more.

Scully and Wynn are riding over the frozen Caribbean when their vehicle breaks down. They are forced to continue on foot. Luckily, they find an old aircraft carrier frozen and abandoned. On it are plenty of supplies and a vehicle they can use with plenty of fuel. They are on their way again and soon make it to the Panama Canal. Only there are a bunch of hostiles there and they pursuit the vehicle. They manage to set the vehicle on fire and Scully and Wynn find their way blocked by a wall of shipping containers.

The first of the new series is off to a good start. It introduces us to the two and their pet badger Rah Rah. We get their personalities and relationships established. Wynn is kind of a little sister to Scully. They were looking for Wynn’s parents but apparently decided to abandon that. A brief visit to the aircraft carrier shows us how the world has changed. Ends with the two being attacked and trapped by a hostile group. A fun escapist story as Dixon explains what he intended for this series to be in a brief letter at the end.
