“Death of a Legend”

Writer: Roy Thomas

Artist: S. Plunkett

The story of the final day of live of Robert E. Howard.

“Slow Dance”

Writer & Artist: Bill Sienkiewicz

Something about dancing.

The final issue. Like the others before it, it was a mixed bag. The Roy Thomas story was the best. A very moving story about Howard’s suicide. I also loved The Beast, Love Doesn’t Last Forever, Out of Phase and They Just Fade Away. I also liked the Cholly & Flytrap story which I normally don’t. The others were mediocre or downright dumb. The final story they had was completely incomprehensible.

The Galactus story ends just as it was getting really interesting. The magazine promised to release a special to finish the story. Unfortunately, this never happened. Byrne did tell what was planned in an interview but sadly I would have liked to get the whole story.

The magazine was declining in quality. I didn’t like most of the ongoing stories they were running or the standalone ones. It was also getting filled with previews of upcoming stuff. More advertisement than story. I think this was a noble effort on their part. To be honest most of the good stuff was released as graphic novels and you wouldn’t even need to get the series to read them. A very flawed series but something I don’t regret checking out.

This was another mixed bag. I loved the Galactus story even though it was too short. The Beyond Legend was a really good one with excellent art. Year 20 was also good. The only good thing about Cobalt 60 was it ended this issue. Everything else did not appeal to me.

“The Fix”

This issue shows the decline of this magazine. I only like the Galactus story and The Fix. All the others were boring or downright dumb. I loathe Cobalt 60 which seemed to go on forever. Lots of padding with previews of other properties they decided to advertise.

“Little Otis’s Five Cent Ride”

Writers & Artists: John & Laura Lakely

A young Otis spends his last 5 cents on a mechanical horse ride an imagines himself defeating bank robbers in the old west.

This issue was mostly a bust. I loved the Galactus story, but it is only six pages and seems way too short. The Matter of Vengeance was written to go with the cover, and this was also fun. Little Otis was also something I enjoyed. Otherwise, I hated Cobalt 60 which is the other ongoing series they started. The other short stories were either boring, dumb or completely incomprehensible.

Writer: John Byrne

Artists: John Byrne and Terry Austin

Nova explores the abandoned world and finds that the inhabitants were preparing to flee their world. Only something came and took them away. She is called back by Galactus who says the destruction leads to the Milky Way.

This was a very mixed issue for me. First the Galactus story was excellent. I really loved Duet and Relic. Had such beautiful stories and artwork. Groo is a favorite of mine. So having a short story was a big surprise. Corporate Wars was also an excellent tale. Now Cobalt 60 I absolutely hate. Unfortunately, they want to make this an ongoing series. Toadswart and Fire’s Kin I didn’t care for, and the stories make absolutely no sense to me. I either loved the stories or hated them. No real middle ground this time.

“Landed”

Writer & Artist: Keiichi KIoike

An astronaut goes into space and dies. He come back as energy to visit his family.

This issue was a very mixed bag. It first had two great endings for The Sacred and the Profane and Apocrypha. It also had the beginning of an actual Marvel property. They only did this once at the beginning of the series and it was also a Galactus story. Otherwise, I can’t say much for the other short stories although the artwork was very beautiful. Tim Conrad is a very talented artist but his writing leaves much to be desired. He way way overwrites stuff when just looking at the picture would be enough to carry a story.

“Toadswart: Chapter I”

Writer & Artist: Tim Conrad

A traveling artist arrives at the castle where another artist mysteriously died.

I enjoyed this issue. The regular Sacred and Profane gives us some backstory on the origins of the crusade. It is coming to an interesting conclusion. The new Apocrypha story is also an interesting one. The Potty’s Over was a fun EC type horror story. Every story except the Toadswart one was good. I didn’t like it for it was wordy and didn’t make much sense. Unfortunately, it will continue for another issue.
