CAMELOT 3000 #1

“Chapter One: The Past and Future King!”

Writer: Mike W. Barr

Artist: Brian Bolland

It is the year 3000 and aliens are invading Earth. They have attacked Britian and are slaughtering the population. Tom Prentice a young archeology student is fleeing to France with his parents when they are attacked by an alien ship. His parents are killed, and Tom flees to an archeology dig at Glastonbury Tor. He goes in and finds the tomb of King Arthur. Arthur awakens and kills the aliens that are pursuing Tom. They take the alien ship to Stonehenge and reawaken Merlin. Merlin goes to Salisbury to retrieve Excalibur. A hand from the pool inside a nuclear reactor tosses Excalibur to Arthur only it disappears. At the UN in New York the sword appears inside a stone on the floor of the General Assembly.

This is the first maxi-series that DC did. I really love the idea of doing a sequel to King Arthur as a futuristic sci-fi story set in the year 3000. The Earth in this time is overpopulated and has given up on space travel making it very vulnerable to alien invasion. A nice nod to the legend that Arthur would return in Britain’s hour of need. This first issue sets the stage for a very interesting story ahead.

  1. Oh this takes me back. Big fan of Bolland, back from his Judge Dredd days. I think he was better than this deserved though – Bolland took so long to do his art (for obvious reasons, as its so precise) that his work is really quite rare; similar to Barry Windsor Smith, I just wish his work was reserved for writers and projects truly deserving- like The Killing Joke, for an easy example.

I suddenly try to imagine Bolland working on Alan Moore’s Watchmen. That would have taken years to get completed, lol. Would have looked beautiful though!
