Red Sonja confronts Vampirella in a city circa 1971. Sonja finds out that Vampirella is very strong and powerful. Yet Sonja starts to master her own new suit and weapons. The two put up a good fight that takes them all over the city. They destroy all kinds of stuff until Sonja manages to tie up Vampirella using her suit. Others come from the project and stop Sonja from killing Vampirella. We find out at the end that some powerful threat has destroyed a plural Earth and might threaten all the Earths.
The final issue was basically a big smackdown fight between Sonja and Vampirella. I haven’t read Vampirella’s series so I don’t know how this came about. It was a good fight issue. Both girls showed they were powerful and someone to recon with. Sonja does win since this is her series. Ends with the hint of an upcoming Vampirella vs. Red Sonja series. So far haven’t heard of this being released but sounds promising. This was a well done and tightly written series. Did a good job of introducing the reader like me who has no idea what the Project Superpowers are about. One of the better Sonja crossovers.
Sonja is taken to the HQ of the project. There she is given a new advanced suit of armor. A stun stick and she gets to test it out in the holoroom against some robots. She does have some issues with adjusting to her new environment. For one some of the more science types talk down to her. They also are a bit shocked at her immodesty in striping naked in front of everyone. She does have doubts about this. Yet the food is good and the beds are soft. She gets woken up because of a big emergency. An apocalyptic event is occurring and it looks like it is caused by Vampirella.
This issue is one that deals with Sonja and her fish out of water experience with this futuristic space station. She has a lot of questions that she just doesn’t have the education to understand. She doesn’t understand why you can’t kill people. Nor that you have to wear more modest clothing. An OK issue that shows she will have some cool futuristic armor and battle Vampirella who is also a recent recruit to the project. A good issue to introduce the project and Sonja’s experience with it.
Skarab Nor has captured the superpower team with some magical creature. He is going to sacrifice them when Sonja appears. She at first acts like she wants to join him and serve him. This works for her to get close enough to chop off the sorcerer’s hands. Separated from his scepter of power he is vulnerable. Yet Skarab Nor has power to send his creature after Sonja. Only this also loosens it’s hold on Vana. She manages to create a forcefield to shield Sonja. She also conjures up a sword for her to use. Sonja then kills Skarab Nor and ends the threat he poses to the world. The superpower team then invites her to join the project. Sonja does agree to accompany them back to their base and see what it has to offer.
This was an interesting story. I like how Sonja defeats this all-powerful sorcerer. She did do it with a little help from the super team but she pretty much saved the day. So, they decided to offer her a position with their organization. Considering Sonja hates magic which is what all this technology seems like, I have some doubts of this working out. Also, if I have any complaint about this issue, it seemed too short. Otherwise, this is an enjoyable series.
Red Sonja cuts Captain Future in two with her sword. This shocks the other members of the superpower squad. Only Captain Future can’t be killed and uses his power to put himself together. He grabs Sonja and has Vana imprison her in a force field. The group then goes on to find the metahuman that they detected. Sonja stuck in the force field is surrounded by wolves. Just in time for the field to dissipate. She has to grab her sword and kill the wolf pack. Angry she heads off to finish her mission of killing Skarab Nor. When she gets to his castle she finds that the superpowers are Skarab Nor’s prisoner. He plans to sacrifice them to his dark gods so he can transcend to an all powerful being.
This issue was a fun one. Sonja proves even without any superpowers to be almost a match for these visiting superbeings. I love how she just swears up a storm while being held prisoner. How she gets real angry fighting the wolves. The sorcerer is obviously a powerful being to be reckoned with. Sonja will have an interesting time defeating him.
Red Sonja is in the wilds of Corinthia when she is ambushed by a group of very dumb thugs. They have been sent by the sorcerer Skarab Nor. Sonja easily handles these morons and we get a flashback to how Sonja started on this mission. The queen of Corinthia hired her to kill this evil sorcerer that was threatening the world. Sonja is a bit nonchalant about it but is convinced to take the job. She has to go through a ceremony and get a witch mark drawn on her forehead. So back to the present and Sonja yells her defiance at Skarab Nor during a thunderstorm. The next morning she comes on a strange group of people. Four members of the superpowers have come to explore this Earth. There is this organization of superheroes from many different dimensions that keep the peace in the multi-verse. Seems that they detected a metahuman on this world. They do find Sonja and a fight ensues as Sonja thinks the superheroes are demons. She surprises them by holding her own and actually cutting them with her sword.
So another Red Sonja crossover. This time with a superhero organization that is multi-dimensional. This series is supposed to have Sonja recruited in the organization and become a superhero. So far the story has got my interest. It does a good job of introducing the superheroes and Sonja. We get the idea that her sorcerer foe may be a metahuman. Sonja is a total badass who exudes confidence and power. Not really familiar with the Project Superpowers but looking forward to where the story is going.
