Betty, Veronica, Red Sonja and Vampirella are questioned and released by the police after discovering the body of the assistant coach. At Pop’s over dinner they discuss how the police don’t take them seriously and should start their own investigation. So the four question the students and check out the biology lab where two of the victims worked. Nothing comes of it but during lunch another body shows up in the kitchen freezer. A blowhard jock named Jorge. Betty and Veronica have their story rejected by the school paper as being lacking in hard facts. So Betty decides to do some research at the school library. The first old paper she pulls has a picture of the four girls in the ’70s.

Wow, what a coincidence. The first paper she pulls has a picture of them. They also can’t believe the police aren’t taking them seriously or the newspaper editor wants more facts about the occult cult. I am so shocked. I will say I love Sonja having a rare steak for her dinner. That is my kind of girl. Anyway this issue was a bit mediocre. Not much really happens but it did in a very easy way set up some interesting story point for the future.

RED SONJA AND VAMPIRELLA MEET BETTY AND VERONICA #1

Late at night a teacher is killed at Riverdale High. The next night Vampirella and Red Sonja meet on the outskirts of town. They are there to investigate the Cult of Chaos. A visit to the morgue confirms that the cult is active. They also find Betty and Veronica there investigating the murder for their high school newspaper. They offer to help Red Sonja and Vampirella in the investigation. First a visit to Veronica’s mansion. The two visitors are outfitted in more appropriate clothes for high school students. That the two are a little too old is explained away as them being European and everyone knows Europeans look a little more mature.

So the first day of school is mostly uneventful. Sonja does join the football team and leads it to victory. Vampirella joins Betty and Veronica in cheerleading. Soon after the winning game there is a scream. Everyone runs to the source and finds coach Foy dead and inside a pentagram on the ground.

Well another goofy team up. They really went all out for this. Naturally the whole idea is absurd and the story goes with that. Having Red Sonja and Vampirella pretend to be high schoolers is like something from a cheezy eighties movie. There is some real fun tongue in cheek humor. Like the fact that Betty and Veronica have no problem with vampire hunters from another dimension and time. You get the feeling that weird stuff happens all the time in Riverdale. Also Sonja is shocked she can’t carry her sword to school because of a no weapon policy. Her response is “Then what in the seven seas do they teach you?” Yes high school is a pretty worthless place. Some fun writing with beautiful artwork is starting out this series on a high note.
