“Wooly Bully Part II War Movie!!”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Rosa Winters has set up shop in the Doodyite village that her troops just recently massacred. Scout sneaks in to visit and finds that Rosa is one bitter woman. She is now more machine that human and blames Scout for the chain of events that brought her to where she is. Scout manages to take her daughter hostage in order to escape. Meanwhile his sons meet the local kids in the Hopi cave community. They have developed telekinetic powers and one kills a rabbit. This upsets young Victorio who uses his own telekinetic power to bring it back to life. This gets the interest of the Doodyites who plan to kidnap him. The story ends with Redwire planning on hunting down Scout.

“The Slaying of Buffalo Monster”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman.

Child of Water has succeeded in killing Owl Man Giant. Now he is going after the Buffalo Monster. The Buffalo Monster lives on the prairie and kill anyone who builds a fire. Child of Water asks the gopher for help. His advice to go forward behind the Buffalo’s back. Then the gopher digs a tunnel to the Buffalo Monster. He asks the Buffalo for some of his fur and takes the fur over his heart so Child of Water knows where to shoot. Child of Water succeeds in killing the Buffalo Monster.

This issue has some interesting developments. Rosa apparently has a real vendetta toward Scout. In some ways she is right that Scout was the trigger that started the Civil War. She will be a formidable enemy. His younger son Victorio is showing some powerful psychic abilities and the Doodyites are planning to kidnap him. This with Redwire coming into the mix should keep Scout’s hands full.

The Tales of the Apache continues on. Child of Water kills his second monster and these monsters are so far pretty dumb. This is a great feature and looking forward to the next chapter.

“Wooly Bully”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Scout and his sons accompany the Doodyites to their village. The village they come upon is deserted. They find out that Rosa Winter’s army massacred most of the inhabitants. Scout stays the night to help bury the dead. Young Tahzey gets lured by a flute and comes upon what look like giant demons. Scout comes to the rescue but the demons are actually robots made by a group of Hopi Indians. The Hopi have saved some of the villagers and offer sanctuary in their cave. Just on the horizon Rosa and her army are approaching.

“The Slaying of Owl Man Giant”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Child of Water goes out with his brother Slayer of Enemies to kill the Owl Man Giant. Child of Water has a bow his mom made and was empowered with bolts of lightning. Slayer of Enemies kills a deer and Owl Man Giants comes and takes it. Slayer of Enemies cries like a baby and Child of Water challenges Owl Man Giant to a duel. They will shoot four arrows at each other with Owl going first. Child picks up a blue stone that makes Owl’s arrows miss him. Then Child shoots and all four find their target. Next Child of Water plans to go after the Buffalo Monster.

“La Duke’s Tips for Real Men”

The real man picture contest winners are announced. The grand prize goes to Paul Rocheleau of Amherstburg, Ontario. There are also three runner ups. Got to admit that only a real man would be able to get a case full of guns in Canada.

The next Scout story was a sedate one. Beautifully drawn it introduced the enemy that Rosa Winters has become. Scout seems drawn to getting involved with this fight. The advanced Hopi society seems like an interesting idea that has potential.

Also the Tales of the Apache comes along nicely. Slayer of Enemies was clearly misnamed. He is a wussy crybaby. Enjoying learning about Apache folk tales.

“Big River”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Yuma manages to capture the “Empress Jones.” The Doodyites that were on board managed to make sure the crew weren’t able to arm themselves. Rosa Winters is attacking their settlement and conspired with Yuma to hijack the ship. Now Yuma is a few brick shy of a full load. He stages a fight between Scout and a disgruntled member of his gang. Scout knocked the guys eye out when they were boarding and this guy wants revenge. He is given a flamethrower to fight Scout. Scout though is able to overcome this unfair advantage and set off the flamethrower. The guy then on fire runs into crates of ammo causing an explosion. The New American Army arrives in time looking for their guns. Captain Mary heads off to find a new crew and Scout and his boys continue with their wanderings.

“He Finds Power”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

The second chapter in Tales of the Apache. White Painted woman lays in the falls and gets pregnant with Child of Waters. She is warned that he must be hidden under their fire or Giant Owl Man will eat the boy. She manages to hide the boy and the Giant Owl Man who is dumb as a tree stump can never find him. One day the boy asks for a bow and arrows to kill the monster. He gets hit by lightning to prove that he is the son of Lightning. He is given a bow and will hunt the monsters.

The further adventures of Scout continues. He show that he is a very skilled fighter and a lucky one. Yuma will make a good future villain. He’s obviously nuttier than a fruitcake and will probably want a rematch with Scout. Rosa Winters is shown to be mounting a campaign to reunite this part of the country with her New America. The Doodyites the cult that grew from Doody is also shown to be a main player in this story. A great action story with some beautiful artwork make this an enjoyable story.

The Tales of the Apache comes along just fine. Its obvious that Truman has a love for the Apache and it comes through with his telling of this Apache mythology.

“Proud Mary!”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Scout and his sons are on a river barge heading downstream. He is on the “The Empress Jones” heading down the Hassayampa river. The captain Mary takes a liking to Scout and his boys. Trouble is ahead in the brigand Atuma Yuma. Atuma has build a dam on the river and wants to steal the shipment of arms on the barge. Scout manages with his trusty Enfield to hit the mortar ammunition and cause an explosion. Unfortunately the river is mined and the barge sinks onto a sandbar. The story ends with Atuma’s men getting ready to board the barge.

“White-Painted Woman”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

A telling of an Apache folklore with illustrations. White-painted woman lives with the Tin-eh-ah or Apache people. They are terrorized by the monster Giant Owl Man. Giant Owl Man likes to raid the people and eat their woman and children. Slayer of Enemies live with White-painted woman. Giant Owl Man likes to torment Slayer of Enemies by putting out his fires or stealing his food.

Well White-painted woman has had enough and asks Usen the giver of life for help. He sends the Gahn who hits her with lightning to get pregnant. She gives birth to Child of Water.

This title is coming along nicely. There is plenty of action and we get introduced to some new characters. Some good and some bad. Interesting news reports tell of a revolt on the Soviet Moonbase. There is a cult of Doodyists and administrator Winters continues her campaign of reuniting America.

The new feature called Tales of the Apache is really a great idea. Truman used this folklore in the first story arch and it is great to learn about this Apache myth. The series is shaping up to be a very interesting read.

“Funkytown”
Writer & Artist: Timothy Truman

Scout and his two sons come upon a settlement in this new post-civil war America. Funkytown has grown around an old shopping mall into a thriving outpost of civilization in New Mexico. The place is run by the Union and main power players are the union rep Boss Torville. A Dr. Portugal who is engaged in some dubious medical experiments and Redwire a mysterious figure in a gas mask and red hood. Scout trades some jewelry for supplies but Boss Torville then charges a bunch of bogus taxes and fees. The result is Scout and his sons are put to work. This is apparently a trick that the union rep likes to use with newcomers. Eventually Scout gets into a fight with Redwire who seems to know Scout from the past. This fight takes them into office of Funkytown’s accountant. The fight exposes that this accountant has been stealing. The accountant is hanged while Scout and his boys take off.

The second book in the series starts to introduce what we can expect. Funkytown seems like something out of Beyond Thunderdome. Sort of what America has devolved to in this alternate reality of 2015. Redwire apparently knows Scout and carries a big grudge against him. A major villain that will be in this series with an air of mystery on his real identity.

“Indian Country A Journey Through the Southwest in a Rented Ford Taurus”
By Timothy Truman

Truman and his wife traveled through the southwest in Arizona and New Mexico. With the pictures they took of the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. He visits the reservations of the Navajo and Apache. He goes into the history of the area. A very enjoyable article.

The first in a new Scout series. Truman does a great job of setting up the new series. The story is told by an interview with a doctor and a grown up Victor in 2030. Scout is now a father with two young sons. America is now a failed state that has fallen into various enclaves. Rosa Winters is trying to reunite the country and using very brutal tactics. The artwork has a grandeur about it with its beautiful Southwest scenery. I look forward to exploring this new world.

NEW AMERICA #4

comics

“No America”
Writers: John Ostrander & Kim Yale
Artist: Gary Kwapisz

Its 2014 and the civil war is nearing an end. The plane Rosa Winters is on is shot down. The Israelis have betrayed Rosa to President Loper in exchange for getting the Pope. It doesn’t do any good for them as Loper then manages to get ahold of Winter’s diary and have it published. Now all the dirty laundry is exposed including Israel’s and the Free States involvement with assassinations. Winters does survive the crash and a team of specialists managed to save her but in the process turns her into a cyborg. She manages to steal from Loper’s bank account and hire out a division of armor from the Swords of Texas. This force manages to ambush Loper’s forces around El Paso and Winters is victorious. She hunts down Loper and kills him as he is making a plea for help on TV. Winters then announces that she is taking over the government.

An so the final entry in this mini-series comes to an exciting end. The civil war seems to be resolved and Winters comes out on top. She is now more machine than human. It was an exciting ending that leaves a lot of questions on the future which should be explored in the new Scout series. This was the better of the two mini-series. It explored what was happening in the world and Winters is a tragic figure. Sort of like Darth Vader. Starts out young and idealistic and ends up a bitter cyborg. A great set up for the new series.

“The Avignon Gambit”
Writers: John Ostrander & Kim Yale
Artist: Gary Kwapisz

For the past few years Winters has lead the Southwest Rebellion. She’s had some success and has been able to cultivate contacts in South America. Now with the help of the Israelis she will rescue the Pope. The Pope is a captive of a drug lord in Colombia. The drug lord Munoz did not like the new Pope’s activism and hopes to eventually replace him with a puppet cardinal that he has. Winters manages to successfully take over the radio station that the Pope is at and convince him to call for a crusade against the drug lords. In the uprising they manage to get the Pope back to Texas. Winters then turns on the Israelis by keeping the Pope in America to weld his political influence. She ends up killing her Israeli friends.

The story is getting more interesting. Rosa is showing a commitment to her country even at the expense of her friends. Interesting that they accurately predicted a South American Pope in the next century. We also get narrative from her autobiography which is published in 2016. Always interesting to read about the future when you’re living in it.

NEW AMERICA #2

comics

“A Scream of Anastasia”
Writers: John Ostrander & Kim Yale
Artist: Gary Kwapisz

Michael Stroganoff is a self-made man. After making a fortune he takes advantage of the collapse of the US government to form the Kingdom of Alaska and him as the king. The kingdom is in reality a puppet of the two major powers in the north Canada and the USSR. These powers see the kingdom as a useful buffer state. The Soviets have their military bases and the Canadians control the oil fields. Stroganoff walks a fine line in not aligning himself too closely with one of the powers. Craig Creek and Avner believe that its in the best interests of both Israel and America that the two powers have a falling out.

So a Columbian drug lord comes with his daughter who has been arranged to be married to the crown prince. In the retinue is Rosa Winters. She and the other Israeli agents have managed to infiltrate the palace. They assassinate the royal family. Both the Soviets and Canadians think its the other that has attacked. It leaves a sore wound in relations between the two powers that never heals.

The second was a fascinating story. An independent kingdom of Alaska. The royal family lives in opulence in an ornate palace. There are tracked limos to carry guest and a sledge pulled by polar bears. Its another fascinating look into the world that exists in this alternate dystopian future. Rosa is a lot harder and has a cybernetic hand with a built in gun wired to her brain. She does decide to save the young daughter of the family and raise her as her own. Giving her a touch of humanity that exists within her.

“Baja, Japan”
Writers: John Ostrander & Kim Yale
Artist: Gary Kwapisz

Rosa Winters is about to assassinate President Loper in Houston when she is stopped by Avner and his men. Israel does not feel that killing Loper now is in anyone’s interest since he is the only thing holding the country together. They are interested in replacing him with Rosa. For now though they have an assignment for Rosa. The Japanese are about to buy the Baja. Rosa with the Israeli team go down to start a rebellion and quash the deal. They recruit a rebellious former Soviet agent who now rallies for a union and Father Galvez the brother of a slain revolutionary. A rally sees Father Galvez killed by a sniper bullet which galvanizes a large scale uprising and results in Rosa losing her hand to a sword welding ninja.

The first book in this Scout mini-series is the start to a real interesting story. The rebellion started in the Swords of Texas comes to head in this series. An interesting idea for the Japanese to buy Baja. A very ’80s thing with the Japanese out to conquer the world. Its shown that both sides in this transaction have ulterior motives. The Communist Mexicans hope to get cheap weapons which they will later turn on the Japanese. The Japanese plan to own all of Mexico. We also get the general storyline for this series. The Israeli’s will be using Rosa has she gets into a lot of political intrigue in this alternate history. There is some cynicism as its shown the Israelis assassinated Father Galvez to start the revolution.
